8 Questions and Answers about Hexagonal Magnets

Hexagonal magnets are considered to be a rather ‘unusual shape’ of magnet; they fall under the category of polygonal magnets, and some customers also refer to them as hexagonal magnets. Customers encountering this type of magnet for the first time may have a few questions. Below, Xiao Fu has compiled some of the more common queries; please feel free to have a look if you’d like to find out more.

1. What materials are typically used for hexagonal magnets?

Currently, neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) is the predominant material on the market, as it offers strong magnetic force and a wide temperature tolerance range (80–220°C), making it suitable for most applications.

2. Are hexagonal magnets strong? The shape does not determine the magnetic strength; this depends primarily on the material, dimensions and performance grade. For the same dimensions, N52 will be stronger than N35. However, if the thickness is too thin, the magnetic strength will not be sufficient.

3. Why do engineers design them as hexagons?

Mainly for structural compatibility and ease of installation (for example, in irregular spaces).

4. How thin can hexagonal magnets be made? They can be made to a thickness of around 0.5 mm; however, the thinner they are, the weaker the magnetic force and the lower the yield rate. Most of the customers we have encountered require magnets of around 1 mm in thickness.

5. How are hexagonal magnets magnetised?

Magnetisation is usually performed in the thickness (axial) direction, though radial magnetisation is also an option.

6. What is the difference between hexagonal magnets and standard circular magnets?

The main differences lie in their shape and structural applications. Hexagonal magnets are better suited for assembly, positioning and anti-rotation mechanisms. Circular magnets, on the other hand, are more versatile and cost-effective.

7. What are the main applications for hexagonal magnets?

Magnetic assembly modules, smart devices, and positioning and anti-rotation structural designs.

8. Are hexagonal magnets prone to breaking?

Not under normal use. However, neodymium magnets are prone to breaking if subjected to impact, particularly at the sharp corners. In some applications, they are housed within metal structural components to prevent breakage.
