Do ferrite magnets have pole number when magnetised?

The magnetisation of ferrite magnets is categorised by the number of poles. Most ferrite magnets we encounter in everyday life are 2-pole (one N-pole and one S-pole), though they can, of course, be magnetised to have 4, 6, 8 or even more poles. The term ‘number of poles’ here refers to the number of magnetic poles formed after the magnet has been magnetised; multi-pole magnetisation requires specialised fixtures. Common ferrite components such as cubes, discs and rings can all be magnetised either as standard or with multiple poles, depending on requirements.

So, does a higher number of poles mean a better ferrite magnet?

Not at all. The number of poles depends primarily on the product’s design and intended application. For example, for standard adsorption applications, there is no need whatsoever for complex multi-pole magnetisation. However, for motors, sensors and encoders, the specific number of poles required must be determined based on rotational speed, structure, magnetic field distribution and the motor’s design specifications.
