When consulting magnetic ring products, many people will first ask, "What material is the magnetic ring usually made of?" In fact, the materials used for different purposes of magnetic rings are also different. The material of magnetic rings mainly depends on the usage environment, magnetic performance requirements, etc. Currently, common materials on the market include ferrite, neodymium iron boron, samarium cobalt, and composite injection molded magnetic rings (injection molded ferrite/injection molded neodymium iron boron), among which ferrite magnetic rings are the most widely used.
Ferrite magnetic rings can be divided into two categories: permanent ferrite and soft ferrite. Permanent magnet ferrite has fixed magnetism and is commonly used in motor rotors, multipole magnetic rings, speed measuring magnetic rings, household appliance motors, and other products. It has the advantages of low cost, corrosion resistance, and resistance to demagnetization. Soft magnetic ferrite itself does not maintain magnetism for a long time and is mainly used for electromagnetic interference (EMI) suppression in electronic circuits, high-frequency transformers, inductors, filters, and other fields.
Sintered ferrite magnetic rings

Among soft magnetic ferrites, manganese zinc ferrite and nickel zinc ferrite are the most common. Manganese zinc ferrite has high magnetic permeability and low loss, suitable for operating frequencies ranging from several kilohertz to several megahertz. Therefore, it is widely used in products such as switching power transformers, power adapters, inductors, and common mode inductors. Nickel zinc ferrite has higher electrical resistivity and can effectively reduce high-frequency eddy current losses, making it more suitable for applications with frequencies of tens of megahertz or even higher. Therefore, it is commonly used in data cable magnetic rings, USB cables, HDMI cables, network cables, power cables, and various EMI anti-interference magnetic rings.
If the product requires a higher magnetic field strength, sintered neodymium iron boron magnetic rings are usually used. Neodymium iron boron is a high-performance permanent magnet material that can provide much higher magnetic force than ferrite at the same size. Depending on the application's magnetic properties, shape structure, and number of poles, injection molded neodymium iron boron magnetic rings and bonded neodymium iron boron magnetic rings can also be selected.
There is no absolute ‘best’ or ‘worst’ when it comes to magnetic rings made from different materials; the key is to choose the right one based on your specific application requirements.
