Regarding the number of magnets required, the quantity needed for a wind turbine is closely related to the number of pole pairs, rotor diameter, and power rating. Generally, small wind turbines may require only a few dozen magnets, while large direct-drive wind turbines can use up to several hundred.


Regarding magnet shape, arc-shaped and wedge shaped magnets are predominant in wind turbines. This design is intended to conform to the large-diameter rotor structure and ensure uniformity of the air gap magnetic field. In practical applications, special-shaped magnets—such as trapezoidal, segmented arc-shaped, or chamfered designs—are also employed based on the motor’s topological structure to optimize flux distribution and reduce cogging torque.

In terms of performance requirements, neodymium-iron-boron magnets for wind power applications typically use high-performance sintered materials, such as grades N38SH, N40UH, and higher. These magnets not only feature a high energy product (BHmax) but also possess a high intrinsic coercive force (Hcj), enabling them to maintain stable magnetic properties in operating environments above 150°C and prevent irreversible demagnetization. Additionally, to withstand harsh environments such as offshore wind power, they must exhibit excellent corrosion resistance, typically achieved through coatings such as nickel plating or epoxy.
