In terms of material, the most common type is neodymium iron boron magnets, which are currently one of the strongest permanent magnetic materials available. Even in small sizes, they can generate extremely strong magnetic attraction (far exceeding that of ferrite magnets of the same size). They are very hard but relatively brittle.
Small silver magnets may also be nickel-plated ferrite magnets. Ferrite itself is usually black or dark gray, and nickel plating also gives it a silver color. They are much weaker than neodymium magnets, but are very inexpensive and more corrosion resistant. If the magnetism does not feel very strong, it may be this type.
Less common are nickel-plated aluminum-nickel-cobalt or samarium-cobalt magnets, which have specific high-temperature or corrosion-resistant requirements and are generally not coated, accounting for a very small share of the small magnet market.

For applications, small silver magnets are mostly used in DIY crafts and model making. In home and office settings, they are used in fishing equipment, such as magnetic reels.
